Herta Helmers

PALMER — Herta Helmers, of Palmer, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Tuesday.

Her family includes Rita Helmers, Doug and Joan Helmers, and Alan and Jean Helmers. She has five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Her husband Helmer and grandson Brian Helmers are deceased.

Herta Droese was born on July 9, 1924, in Luisenthal, Ostpreussen (East Prussia), Germany to Herman and Marie Reske Droese. In 1945, she fled her homeland and found refuge in Ostfriesland (East Frisia), Germany. There she met Helmer Helmers and in 1949 they were married in Munkeboe, Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1952, they emigrated to the United States and settled in the Palmer area. She was a homemaker and worked at Palmer Consolidated School for many years.
