Lehigh River Days ready to roll
42nd annual event to feature fishing tourney, carnival and more
LEHIGH — Lehigh River Days continues to grow, and this year will be no exception, offering more activities and affordable entertainment for families.
“There should be plenty for people to do all weekend long,” said Sadie Andersen, president of the Lehigh River Days Committee, “and we like to keep the cost relatively low.”
New events planned for the 42nd annual Lehigh River Days, set for June 14-16, include a carp fishing tournament as well as a carnival for kids.
“We will be hosting the 12th annual Lehigh River Valley Carp Classic Fishing Tournament,” Andersen said.
It will be in conjunction with Father’s Day.
In past years, she said the tournament has always been held on a separate weekend, but this year the River Days committee decided to try combining the two events. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, with registration for two-person teams starting at 7 a.m.
“We encourage dads to bring out their sons for the fishing tourney on Sunday,” she said.
Also Sunday will be a barbecue cookoff competition and a community church service.
New for kids this year will be the Scott Amusement Carnival downtown by the volleyball pit. Andersen said weekend passes are available for the carnival. Other kid-friendly activities will include the Lil’ Miss and Mr. Pageant and glow foam pit on Friday night, as well as a mechanical bull, bounce houses and a traditional foam pit on Saturday.
The annual parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Andersen said anyone who would like to be in the parade is welcome to show up at 9:45 a.m. on East Main Street.
“Last year, we had a lot of parade entries,” she said, adding that she hopes to see that continue.
Another highlight of Lehigh River Days is the mud volleyball tournament.
“Last year, the mud volleyball tournament turned out bigger than expected,” Andersen said.
So this year, she said the committee is prepared to have extra lighting so the tournament can continue after dark, if needed.
And it wouldn’t be Lehigh River Days without the log rolling contest, which Andersen said has always been popular.
“It’s a very unique activity and a lot of fun for people to do,” she said.
In addition, attendees will be able to listen to the music of Jesse Wilson, a local act, on Saturday, and Reco Jolly Jr. & the Good Times on Sunday afternoon.
“They are a relatively new band,” Andersen said of Reco Jolly. “They started with karaoke and began to play at local taverns and have opened for a comedy show at the Laramar Ballroom.”
Various food vendors will also be available throughout the weekend.
In her second year as president, Andersen said she especially appreciates the sponsors who make the weekend possible.
“We wouldn’t be able to put the event on without our sponsors,” she said, “and we are very appreciative of all of them.”
