Hawkeye Theatre to present 'Unnecessary Farce'

If you’re looking for laughs, look no further than the Hawkeye Community Theatre’s upcoming performance, “Unnecessary Farce: A Comedy.”

The show, written by Paul Slade Smith, features two cops, three crooks, and eight doors in a motel. The show is a comedy of errors in which the two cops attempt to catch the embezzling mayor red-handed.

The comedy aspect is one of the major reasons why Director Lindey Krug was attracted to this play.

“It’s pretty fast-paced, and it’s hysterical,” she said. “That’s pretty much what drove me to it. I know the Fort Dodge audience likes a good comedy, and when I was reading it, I was laughing out loud. I could just picture it, and I could hear it, and I knew that it would be a good one to do.”

The cast for the show, which begins Wednesday, features Grant Hendrix, Sarah Shaw, Jenna Hendrix, Daulton Rokes, Lonnie Tolle, Arthur Lund and Rachel Loots.

It takes a lot of work to get a play in motion, and a director must be able to wear many hats while also finding talented people to help cover all the bases.

“A director for Hawkeye is pretty much the jack of all trades,” Krug said. “You’re in charge of the audition process, the casting, and obviously the directing. There’s costuming and finding props to use on stage, furniture and lighting and sound cues all have to be done by the director as well.”

“I know the bare bones,” she added. “So I picked a show that didn’t have a lot of bells and whistles to it. I’m very fortunate to have a family of drama people in this community that come out and give me their expertise, cast members who are painting as we speak. I have stage managers who help figure out props and make sure everything is where it’s supposed to be. So, the director in this case does everything, but also this community is very tight knit when it comes to our fine arts.”

The show will run from Wednesday to Saturday, with performances at 7 p.m. nightly with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday — all at Hawkeye Community Theatre, 521 N. 12th St. Tickets are $10, with all tickets being general admission.
