King Band to feature Jive for Five Sunday
The Karl L. King Municipal Band, conducted by Jerrold P. Jimmerson, along with assistant conductor Dan Cassady and announcer Paul Bloomquist, will perform its next weekly concert on Sunday. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. There is no admission charge, courtesy of the city of Fort Dodge. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church from Fort Dodge will again be selling homemade ice cream and cake before and during the concert.
Before the main concert starts, the popular area Brass Quintet, Jive for Five, will do a pre-concert performance, starting at 7 p.m. Group members include Tim Miller from Humboldt on trumpet; David Swaroff from Belmond on trumpet; Kathy Yoakam from Humboldt on French Horn; Dan Cassady from Twin Lakes on trombone; and Paul Bloomquist from Dayton on tuba. These musicians are also members of the King Band, and will perform “Jump Swing Fever” and Karl King’s “Broadway One-Step” later during the concert with the band accompanying.
Marches on the evening program will include “The Gateway City” by the band’s namesake, Karl L. King; along with Roland F. Seitz’s “March: Grandioso.” Other compositions by Karl King include one of his beautiful aerial waltzes, “Desdemona,” and a tuba section feature, “The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.” The favorite encore of the John Philip Sousa Band, “The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas,” is also included. A classical offering for the evening will feature music from French composer Jacques Offenbach with the overture to his 1858 opera, “Orpheus.”
On the lighter side will be a medley of familiar hit songs, titled “The Wizard of Oz Fantasy.” This year, 2024, marks the 85th anniversary of the premiere of that popular movie, The Wizard of Oz, which later became a hit Broadway musical. There is also Cole Porter’s classic “Begin the Beguine,” the perfect easy listening piece for a summer evening in the park.
Closing this concert will be former conductor Reginald R. Schive’s march, “The Fort Dodge Messenger,” which includes a portion of the Senior High School’s song, “Up, Fort Dodgers!” followed by the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Persons attending this Sunday’s concert are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, etc., since there is no public seating available. In case of inclement weather, the concert may be canceled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband.
