Sweet Corn Daze enters 14th year
ROCKWELL CITY – Charity Vogel, Rockwell City Chamber Director, is busting for her inaugural year as Sweet Corn Daze orchestrator to come to fruition. “I was able to help out last year, so – along with the rest of the community – I’ve been looking forward to this year’s celebration,” said Vogel who is in her first year as chamber director.
Festivies kick off Friday, August 2, at 6pm with the ‘The Ridottos – a 20th Century Rock Band’ performing until 9pm. “The event is part of Rockwell City’s Revitalization Board’s ‘Live on the Square’ concert series,” stated Vogel. “Quality music is a great way to get a town celebration going.” Food vendors will have food and drink available for purchase.
Saturday, August 3, is the Sweet Corn Daze celebration with the parade beginning at 10AM at the South-Central Calhoun Middle School. “We’ve got a great line up for the parade,” said Vogel. “Parade line-up starts at 9AM and entries can register on our website at rockwellcity.com or show up at 9AM to register.”
Craft, Merchandise, and Vendors will be available from 10:30AM to 3PM as well as – the main feature – sweet corn. “It’s a big city-wide celebration and picnic,” said Vogel. “The Rotary Club will serve the best sweet corn around. We’ll also have free watermelon and other food choices. There will be a load of picnic tables set up, so we have a place for everyone to congregate and enjoy visiting over sweet corn.”
At 11AM, the Sweet Corn Daze Princess will be crowned, and at 11:15AM, the Rockwell City Rotary Outstanding Citizen of the Year will be announced. The 2023 Princess was Michelle Burley, and the 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year was Deb Foster.
“We have a lot of good family entertainment during the middle of the day,” said Vogel. “From 11AM to 3PM, we have inflatables for the kids with unlimited rides for a $5 wristband. Joyful Colorz will offer free face painting from 11AM – 2PM.”
“We also encourage people to take part in the swimming pool fundraiser where participants have a chance to drop their favorite lifeguard in dunk tank; this helps to raise funds for repairs on the pool.”
During much of the late morning and early afternoon events, DJ Erkenbrack, a solo country rock artist from Rockwell City, will entertain crowds from the bandstand. Class Alumni Reunions will be at 4pm with a Beer Garden and Street Dance beginning at 8pm to cap off Sweet Corn Daze. Kris Karr will play originals as well and rock and country covers at Lynch’s Main Street Bar and Grill.
“We have a board of nine people who help plan everything throughout the year,” said Vogel. “Our chamber has a website at rockwellcity.com and that’s where people can go to see the exact schedule. And, of course, we couldn’t do this without all of our sponsors; we’ll get people and businesses approaching us right up to the event to offer support, and every little bit makes a difference.”
This year’s sponsors include the Rockwell City Chamber, City of Rockwell City, Rockwell City Revitalization, Lake City Vet Clinic, Hendricks Law Office, Champion, Snap-on Tools, First Community Bank, Kalkwarf Dental, Trash and Treasures, Hildreth Company, Ron & Sue Carlson, Landus, Decker & Co Realty, Calibration Solutions, United Bank of Iowa, Opportunity Living, First Community Agency, Toni Kerns, Elmer Prescott, and Lowell & Peg Stoolman.
