Cabaret A Night of Musical Theatre
Annual event showcases 'perfect blend of education, entertainment, community connection'
The Historic Ringland-Smeltzer House was once a gathering space for parlor music and piano lessons.
This Jan. 16-17, the Smeltzer House will host the nostalgic sounds of the 15th annual Cabaret: A Night of Musical Theatre presented by Stage Door Productions.
“This unique event celebrates the world of musical theatre and educates the audience on a wide variety of musical theatre pieces, including hidden gems and timeless classics that often go unseen by mainstream audiences,” said Shelly Bottorff, executive director of the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association. “It offers a rare opportunity to discover the depth and diversity of the genre.”
The Ringland-Smeltzer House has hosted the annual Cabaret for more than a decade and is the perfect space for intimate musical performances.
“It’s perfect due to its unique blend of charm, history, and intimacy,” said Bottorff. “Its elegant architecture and cozy atmosphere create a warm, inviting space that enhances the magic of live musical performances, making every note and lyric feel personal and profound. The Smeltzer House is more than just a venue, it’s a cornerstone of Fort Dodge’s artistic spirit.”
According to Bottorff, past Cabaret performances have included more than 100 people and 100 songs. This year’s Cabaret cast includes Emily Ayres, Henry McCubbin, David Everson, Jason Laird, Nathan Schelle, Maddie Vinchattle, Chloe Jessen, Nate Gibson, Greenlee Crimmins, and more.
Attendees can expect to hear songs from Next to Normal, Out of Our Heads, Aladdin, Chicago, Crazy, Just Like Me, and more.
“It’s the perfect blend of education, entertainment, and community connection, offering something truly special for both seasoned theatre lovers and newcomers alike,” said Bottorff.
Cabaret will be led by Cameron Nelson, who is stepping in for long-time emcee Steve Kersten.
“Cameron’s quick wit and humor are sure to add an extra layer of fun to the evening,” said Bottorff. “As a familiar face and talented performer in several of our past Cabaret shows, we are delighted that he’s willing to take on this new role.”
Audience members at Cabaret will also be treated to local beer, wine, and light appetizers from Shiny Top Brewing and Soldier Creek Winery.
“By attending, guests support the local arts scene and help sustain creative initiatives that enrich the cultural fabric of the community,” said Bottorff. “It’s fun and a meaningful way to engage with others while promoting the performing arts. It’s a must-attend event for anyone looking for a memorable and fulfilling night out.”
Seating is limited for Cabaret. Tickets are $25 and are available at Shiny Top Brewing and online at StageDoorFD.org. Tickets may be available at the door if the show isn’t already sold out.
