Butler Elementary School was put on lockdown Monday afternoon while authorities searched for a suspect who shot a man in that neighborhood.

The victim, who was not identified Monday night, was taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center shortly before 3 p.m. after the shooting at 1816 Seventh Ave. S., according to Fort Dodge Police Chief Kevin Doty.

A few blocks to the south, Butler Elementary, 945 S. 18th St., went on lockdown for about half an hour when the shooting was reported, according to Jennifer Lane, director of communications and community relations for Fort Dodge Community School District.

“The Police Department encouraged us to put the building on lockdown due to some activity in close proximity to the school,” Lane said.

All doors to the school were locked to prevent anyone from entering, and children were kept in the rooms where they were as the lockdown began, she said.
