ALGONA — An Algona man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Sunday morning, according to the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders were called to a cornfield entrance north of Iowa Highway 9 and 130th Avenue at 2:38 a.m. for a person in need of medical attention.

Upon arrival, Elijah Joshua Gelhaus, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined Gelhaus died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

An autopsy will be performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.

Kossuth County sheriff’s deputies, Swea City and Algona EMS and the Kossuth County Medical Examiner responded.
