FD house fire ruled arson

A blaze that heavily damaged a Fort Dodge house Tuesday morning was deliberately set, according to investigators.

The fire at 943 S. 23rd St. was determined to be a case of arson by investigators from the Fort Dodge Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at 8:08 a.m.

An occupant of the home called 911 from a neighbor’s house to report the fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming out of the front door and windows.

The fire was in the basement. Firefighters were able to extinguish it before it spread to the rest of the house.

Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said there was serious fire damage in the basement, with smoke and heat damage in the rest of the house.

The Fort Dodge Fire Department requested assistance from the state Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate the incident.

Two investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office and two from the Fire Department determined the cause of the fire to be arson.

Fort Dodge police, the Webster County Attorney’s Office and MidAmerican Energy responded to the scene along with the Fire Department and Fire Marshal’s office.

The house is owned by Robert A. Hinrichs, of Fort Dodge, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office.
