Taking center stage with Gavin Piper

Gaining courage; Piper’s determination pays off with the band

Gavin Piper was afraid of joining band, but once he stirred up enough courage, it became something special for the Fort Dodge Senior High graduate.

Piper started performing in band when he hit seventh grade.

“I always wanted to play in the band since I was little,” Piper said. “But, I was too scared so once I gained enough courage and determination, I joined.”

Along with the band, Piper plays in the marching band and the jazz band.

For Piper, performing takes a lot of courage, but the criticism also makes him better.

“I like performing because you get constructive criticism to do better,” Piper said. “Getting all of the sheer compliments from others as they watch is great.”

Piper has done over 20-plus shows with concerts and bands.

“My biggest influences have been my grandmother and my mother,” Piper said.

Piper plans on attending Iowa Central Community College and then heading to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
