Moving to the beat
Life long love of dance has helped Pederson grow on stage
At 4 years old, Reese Pederson started an adventure that would lay the foundation for her future and help her grow.
Pederson, a senior at Fort Dodge Senior High School, started dance classes when she was 4 years old, and dance has helped her build into a well-rounded performer.
“Dance has been something that has always and will always be important to me. My mom put me in dance classes because that is some of the only activities for young kids during that time. I ended up loving dance and got more and more involved with music and performance as I got older,” Pederson said. “I love to dance all day every day, but it has also given me confidence to try new forms of performance because I know I can use my dance background to be successful in other things.
“I also met my best friend at dance, so the relationships I have made with my teammates and coaches while dancing are valuable to me as well.”
Through her four years as a Dodger, Pederson has built a full slate of activities and loves to keep busy.
She is a drum major for the Fort Dodge Senior High All-American Marching Band and is involved in theater. She is on the school and studio dance teams.
In school, she is in the National Honor Society and Student Athletic Advisory Committee, which Pederson said are two groups that have really helped her grow as a leader.
Pederson also spends time in church either participating in youth groups or singing during church services.
During the summer months, you can find Pederson on the softball field. She was part of Fort Dodge’s first ever state championship team and was a member of both state runner up squads.
“I have experienced so many amazing things in all my activities, which I am very grateful for,” Pederson said. “Also, I have met lots of new people and made many close friends through everything I am involved in.
“I enjoy doing lots of different things, so I try to be involved in everything my schedule allows.”
When she is on stage either dancing or singing, Pederson loves the exhilaration it brings.
“I like the energy and excitement you feel on stage. Something about it is so special, and I really feel in my element when I perform,” Pederson said. “For me, it’s a way to be myself. Even though I may be portraying a character or persona that is not me. I try to find a way to relate it to myself.
“Although acting completely different is very fun, for me there is always some shared personality trait between myself and the character.”
With a busy schedule, Pederson has to be ready for everything.
“Getting into a good mindset and being mentally prepared will set you up for success,” Pederson said. “Whether it is a softball game or musical performance, both share a similar mindset. This is something I’ve learned and have found very interesting considering the two activities are different, yet tactics learned in one can be transferred to the other.”
This past spring at Fort Dodge Senior High’s musical, Pederson portrayed Ariel Moore in Fort Dodge’s rendition of “Footloose.”
“One of my most memorable things was the 2022 spring musical,” Pederson said. “This was my first high school musical after dealing with COVID cancellation, and it was an experience I will never forget.
“I had so much fun performing and spending time with everyone in the cast. Safe to say ‘Footloose’ will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Through all of her activities, one thing has always been there for Pederson and that is her family.
“My family has been a big influence on me,” Pederson said. “My mom and dad are both very hard working and determined people which drives me to be like them.
“I have learned the importance of being kind from both of my grandmas. I would not be the person I am today without them.”
After graduating from Senior High, Pederson plans to attend Iowa Central Community College, where she will be involved with the dance team and theater as well as the choir program.
