Gowrie’s Bandshell Bash is Sunday
Family-friendly event is free
GOWRIE — A winner of NBC’s “The Voice” will headline a concert this weekend in Gowrie to help raise money and awareness for the arts in rural Webster County.
The Gowrie Area Arts Council’s Bandshell Bash ’23 is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday in City Park in Gowrie. The concert will feature Sundance Head, the 2007 winner of “The Voice,” as well as several other special musical guests.
Bandshell Bash is the main fundraising event of the year for the Arts Council, organizer Duane Davis said.
As a nonprofit, the Gowrie Area Arts Council provides scholarships for high school seniors, sponsors the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Gowrie Fourth of July Celebration, hosts youth art contests with small cash prizes and organizes other live music events in the area.
“We’re trying to keep the arts alive in rural America for all ages,” Davis said. “We are starving out here in the rural areas in the Midwest for entertainment that you might see in bigger cities, so we try to bring as much as we can possibly afford to rural Iowa communities so people can enjoy it.”
Admission to the concert is free and the event is family-friendly, Davis said. Most of the Arts Council’s revenue will come from food and beverage sales at the concession stand, he said. There will also be places to make freewill donations to the organization.
Other performers include Monica Austin, Jesse Wilson, Doc Johnson, Mike Bernard and Liv McNair. Davis said the artists all play within the country genre — everything from modern country to old country to pop country to soul country.
Event partners include Midwest Country Music Organization, along with Broken Strings, a local nonprofit organization started by Scott Kirkhart, of Manson, that works to put guitars in the hands of young Iowans.
Broken Strings will be giving a guitar to a Southeast Valley school district student, Davis said.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a chair to relax in for the show. Coolers, tumblers, bottles, cans and pets are not allowed.
