No charges will be filed in May 31 fatal shooting
Officials say it was self-defense
No criminal charges will be filed against a homeowner who police say was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed a man who was allegedly breaking into his garage in the early morning hours of May 31.
According to a press release from the Fort Dodge Police Department, the investigation into the incident has continued over the last two months.
Shortly after 5 a.m. on May 31, Fort Dodge police were dispatched to 1219 Sixth Ave. S. after the homeowner reported that he had shot a man who was trying to break into his garage. When officers and medics arrived, they found 44-year-old Bryan Gambill unresponsive. Gambill was ultimately pronounced dead.
According to the release from the FDPD, investigators followed up on all available evidence and spoke with “numerous” individuals with knowledge of the incident.
Last week, FDPD investigators met with the Webster County Attorney’s Office to review the evidence gathered, at which time they determined that the homeowner was acting in self-defense and no criminal charges would be filed.
