Algona man pleads not guilty to murdering officer

Kyle L. Ricke

ALGONA — An Algona man accused of fatally shooting Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram last month has entered a written plea of not guilty in Kossuth County District Court.

Kyle L. Ricke, 43, filed his plea on Friday, pleading not guilty to one charge of first-degree murder, a Class A felony. Ricke was apprehended following a four-hour-long manhunt after he allegedly shot and killed Cram, 33, while the officer was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on him on Sept. 13.

Ricke had an active warrant for third-degree harassment, a simple misdemeanor, out of Palo Alto County, court documents show. Ricke had allegedly been harassing a former partner with text messages and phone calls between April and August.

Ricke was also charged with third-degree harassment in August in Kossuth County for allegedly doing the same thing to a different ex-partner.

Ricke is being held in custody on a $2 million cash-only bond. During Ricke’s initial appearance in Kossuth County Magistrate Court last month, prosecutor Scott Brown, with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, said the shooting was captured “at least partially, if not fully” on video, and that the gun used had not yet been located.

Along with the written plea of not guilty, Ricke demanded his right to a speedy trial Friday, which gives the state a deadline of 90 days to take the case to trial.

Ricke is being represented by the Mason City State Public Defender’s Office.

A trial is scheduled for Dec. 12 in Kossuth County.

Starting at $2.99/week.
