Arrest made in Sunday shooting

A Fort Dodge man has been charged with first-degree murder for a fatal shooting that happened on Fort Dodge’s northwest side on Sunday evening.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Olnario Rodriguez-Ruffridge fatally shot his father, Jason Ruffridge, following an altercation at 225 Third Ave. N.W. around 8:42 p.m. on Sunday.

Rodriguez-Ruffridge is charged with first-degree murder, a Class A felony. He had his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court on Wednesday and is being held on a $1 million cash bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 13.

The criminal complaint for the charge says that when officers arrived to the residence at 225 Third Ave. N.W., they found 44-year-old Jason Ruffridge at the location with a gunshot wound to the head and abdomen area. When medics arrived, Ruffridge was pronounced dead.

Rodriguez-Ruffridge was detained nearby and initially charged with minor armed with a dangerous weapon, a serious misdemeanor, and held on a $50,000 cash bond.

Through the investigation, the criminal complaint said, a firearm and other physical evidence was located. Investigators also spoke with witnesses. Information from the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office indicated that the victim’s injuries “were not consistent with self-defense.”
