Mosley sentenced to life for Christmas Day shooting
Montreail Dungy’s youngest daughter will never hear the sound of her father’s voice.
“He spoke about her often and he was so excited for this child, but she will never feel the love that she was intended to receive from him because you stole that opportunity from her,” the child’s mother, Whitney Lockman, told Dungy’s killer in court on Friday morning. “You stole the daddy-daughter dances. You stole her father’s arm to walk her down the aisle when she gets married. You stole the love and support from a dad who was never just an average dad.”
Dungy, 46, was gunned down in the early morning hours of Dec. 25, 2022, while sitting in his car in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood of Fort Dodge. Months later, two men were arrested and charged for the crime.
Lakendrick “Kenny” Mosley, 32, of Fort Dodge, was convicted of first-degree murder in late August. His trial had been moved to Cerro Gordo County. On Friday, District Court Judge Angela Doyle sentenced Mosley to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mosley will also be required to pay $150,000 in restitution to Dungy’s heirs-at-law.
Though the life sentence is statutorily mandated, it is the appropriate punishment for this specific offense, Assistant Attorney General Ryan Baldridge said during the hearing.
“The court heard the evidence in this case,” he said. “The state referred to the defendant’s actions as an execution of Montreail Dungy. …He was within feet of Montreail Dungy when he shot him multiple times — multiple times in the chest, multiple times in the head…. This was a heinous, premeditated act.”
Lockner, who was in a relationship with Dungy at the time of his murder, gave the first of two victim impact statements. On Christmas Day 2022, Lockner was 19 weeks pregnant with their child.
“We could speak about the financial impact that Montreail’s absence has left in our lives — and because I’m an accountant, I know exactly what the numbers are,” Lockner told Mosley at Friday’s sentencing. “I know the cost of raising children and I feel the weight of that financial burden daily. You could try repaying every penny that Montreail would have contributed toward his daughter, but the money means nothing to me without the man.”
“You stole such a rare jewel from our lives and there is no amount of money that can replace it,” Lockner said.
Vera Altman, Dungy’s mother, gave the other victim impact statement. She said her son did not deserve to die that night and recalled that Mosley “smelled like gunpowder” when he came to her house hours after the shooting, seemingly to show his sympathy for her loss.
“The verdict and sentence help bring justice to the family of Montreail Dungy,” said First Assistant Webster County Attorney Brad McIntyre, who prosecuted the case. “We are grateful to the family and to all involved in this case.”
Dungy was sitting in his own car in the 1000 block of 10th Avenue Southwest at about 3 a.m. on Christmas Day 2022 when an individual came up and shot him multiple times at close range before fleeing the scene. In March, Mosley was identified by police as the alleged shooter and his younger half-brother, 27-year-old Darwin Green, was accused of aiding and abetting the murder by driving Mosley to and from the scene. Warrants were issued for both men’s arrests and they were eventually apprehended in southern Minnesota.
Green eventually pleaded guilty to amended charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and fleeing the state to avoid prosecution, both Class D felonies. He was sentenced to five years in prison for each charge, to be served consecutively.
