Friday pursuit ends in flames
Spencer man faces numerous charges after fleeing scene
LAURENS — A Spencer man is facing numerous charges after crashing into two law enforcement vehicles and leading a pursuit through Laurens in Pocahontas County on Friday night.
According to a post by the Iowa State Patrol on Facebook, the State Patrol was assisting the Laurens Police Department on a single vehicle fatality crash when an unrelated vehicle hit both law enforcement vehicles and fled the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, 35-year-old Ricky Paul Burnett, of Spencer, was located at the Casey’s in Laurens and continued to lead law enforcement on a pursuit before his vehicle was disabled on Iowa Highway 10 by stop sticks deployed by the Pocahontas Police Department.
Burnett continued to “rev” the engine of his vehicle until it caught fire. He then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody.
He is being charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident; eluding, second offense; reckless driving; driving while suspended; no SR-22 (high risk insurance); and no proof of insurance. He was arrested and booked into the Pocahontas County Jail, according to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner.
The Iowa State Patrol and Laurens Police Department were assisted by the Pocahontas Police Department, Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, Havelock Fire Department and Laurens Ambulance Service.
