FD council awards contract for riverfront work

Two more jetties to be added near River's Edge Discovery Center

People who enjoy getting close to the water of the Des Moines River on a series of jetties in Fort Dodge will have more options for doing just that next year.

Two more jetties will be added upstream from the current ones as a result of City Council action Monday.

The council hired Doyle Construction, of Fort Dodge, to build the new jetties at a cost of $1,371,118. The work is expected to be done by next fall.

Chad Schaeffer, the city’s chief development officer, said the jetties will be “directly out the back door” of the Matt Cosgrove River’s Edge Discovery Center.

They will all be on the east bank of the river. Schaeffer said a trail will connect them.

A series of six jetties was previously constructed downstream on both sides of the river where what was commonly called the Little Dam once stood.

Other bidders for the work were Rasch Construction, ($1,582,515) and Castor Construction ($1,694,801.25). Both of those companies are from Fort Dodge.

The newest set of jetties and the River’s Edge Discovery Center are both part of an ongoing effort to reconnect the community with the river. The vacant area surrounding the Discovery Center will be redeveloped to include a play area and a large pavilion.

Also on Monday, the council hired Grell Roofing, of Fort Dodge, to replace the roof on the mausoleum building at North Lawn Cemetery. The company will be paid $54,000.

Money from the cemetery’s perpetual care fund will pay for the work.

The city took ownership of North Lawn Cemetery earlier this year.
