Greenleaf, Hayloft demolitions on FD City Council agenda
The Fort Dodge City Council will consider ordering the demolition of two buildings that have long been fixtures in the community — the former Hayloft and the old Greenleaf Care Center — when it meets Monday.
The council meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S., with a workshop on the Kosovo youth exchange.
Kosovo is a nation in the Balkans area of Europe. Since 2016, Fort Dodge has been in a sister city relationship with Gjakova in Kosovo. That has led to delegations of local teenagers traveling to that country.
At 6 p.m., the council’s regular business meeting will begin. During that meeting, the council will consider hiring contractors to knock down what used to be Greenleaf Care Center and the Hayloft.
The former nursing home at 1305 N. 22nd St. has been owned by the city since 2015. Initially, the plan was to find a new use for the building. The current plan is to demolish the building and offer the property as a site for new housing construction.
Mid-Iowa Site Services LLC, of Fort Dodge, offered the apparent low bid of about $130,000 for the demolition job.
The Hayloft at 710 Central Ave. occupied a building that dates to about 1880. It was to get some exterior improvements in a recent project that updated the facades of several other downtown buildings. However, as work began on its facade, serious structural problems were found. Therefore, it was decided to demolish it.
Doyle Construction, of Fort Dodge, submitted the apparent low demolition bid of $205,000.
Also on Monday, the council will apply for a $4 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant for removing asbestos from the long vacant Warden Plaza at 908 First Ave. S.
