Woman freed after being pinned under pickup
A woman was pinned beneath a pickup truck that struck her Thursday morning in the parking lot of a Fort Dodge store, according to police and fire department reports.
The woman was conscious and speaking with rescuers, police Sgt. Matt Webb said. He said she was taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center, in stable condition. Her name has not been released.
The accident happened at 10:23 a.m. in the parking lot of Hy-Vee, 115 S. 29th St.
Webb said a man was driving a pickup truck east through the parking lot and made a left turn to head north toward the lot’s entrance onto First Avenue South. He said as the driver was turning a woman was walking nearby. The truck, he said, bumped the woman, knocked her down, and partially ran over her. The woman became pinned beneath the truck on its passenger side. Assistant Fire Chief Matt Price said a hydraulic rescue tool was used to lift the truck enough so that firefighters could place the woman on a backboard and slide her out from underneath the vehicle.
Price said an off-duty Fire Department lieutenant was going shopping at Hy-Vee when the accident occurred and figured out a strategy for freeing the woman before the on-duty firefighters arrived.
