The Shopping Spree Foodraiser event had members of the Daybreak Rotary, Noon Sertoma, Kiwanis, and Evening Lions sprinting through the Fort Dodge Fareway store hoping to pack in enough food and supplies to keep the food pantries afloat, yet staying under the $500 mark.

“This event is able to provide needed food, laundry and child care items for local pantries,” said Linda Cline, who dreamed up the event four years ago.

“By just sending an email out to the service groups, they are ready to help out and have it in their budget,” Cline said. “Many will scope out the prices to come the closest in order to win the traveling trophy. Those that participate have fun and like doing a hands-on event for organizations. And better yet, the service groups get to talk to each other.”

Daybreak Rotary, led by Sandy Fletcher and Ciera Van Alstine, won the event, with their carts totaling $491.45.

The Evening Lions Club followed at $440.44. Both the Kiwanis, $502.20, and Noon Sertoma, $519.22, clubs lost the event by going over their $500 budget, but all food pantries still won and received the donations.

“It is a heartfelt event that everyone enjoys doing as they race down the aisles to pick up items and to give back to our community,” said Cline.

The Lotus Project, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, the Fort Dodge Community School District, and Holy Trinity Food Bank all received carts of food and supplies from the annual supermarket sweep event.
