Poorly drawn — but lovingly made

Secret artists lead hilarious annual fundraiser

Letitia Anderson, a 2022 recipient of a "poorly drawn portrait" from the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association, reacts with laughter after seeing her masterpieces in person.

Commissioned Christmas portraits are once again available through the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association’s annual holiday fundraiser.

The catch, however, is that the many artists sketching the portraits have varying levels of talent — from professional artists to very beginner levels.

“Whether you get a stunning piece by a skilled artist or an awesomely unique masterpiece reminiscent of a second-grade prodigy, you’ll walk away with a one-of-a-kind treasure, and that’s half the fun,” said Shelly Bottorff, executive director of the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association.

The comical illustrations have been a fundraiser for the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association for the past three years, and according to Bottorff are a hit every year.

“This has turned into a hilarious tradition,” said Bottorff. “Once a year, we gather around the conference table as a board of directors, along with some additional artists, and draw portraits for hours. The result is a unique gift for that someone special on your list that is difficult to buy for.”

According to Bottorff, they’ve had photos of pets submitted, wedding pictures, family pictures, and more.

All proceeds from Poorly Drawn Portraits go toward the operating expenses for the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association.

To receive a commissioned Poorly Drawn Portrait, email a reference photo to fdfinearts@gmail.com before Dec. 6. The cost is a $25 donation with the drawing being returned on Dec. 11. With an extra $10 donation, the art will be fast tracked and a drawing sent within 48 hours.

Starting at $2.99/week.
