DAYTON — Dayton Elementary School students read nearly 700 books last month in an attempt to give Todd the Turkey back his feathers.

According to Dayton Elementary Principal Chelsey Danielson, students in preschool through fourth grade were able to place one feather on Todd the Turkey for each book read in November. In the reading challenge, Todd the Turkey lost his feathers when Felix the Fox stole them from him.

A featherless Todd the Turkey was taped to a hallway wall and students were able to tape a feather to the turkey each day they brought in a completed reading log.

“I am so proud of our students for being excited about reading and wanting to expand our turkey,” said Danielson.

Each class was assigned a feather color which also allowed students to see how many books their grade had read.

The students will soon begin a new reading challenge for December in which they help Buddy the Elf to create a colorful candy cane forest.

“We are excited to see the hallways colorful with gumdrops,” added Danielson.

Starting at $2.99/week.
