Municipal Building work approved
Final phase of renovations is nearing
What may be the final piece of a multi-part renovation of the Fort Dodge Municipal Building was launched Monday by the City Council.
The council hired Jensen Builders Ltd., of Fort Dodge, to do the work at a cost of $521,800.
The most visible part of the upcoming work will be a makeover of the building’s west entrance. For decades, it was the entrance to the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. Now it is an employee entrance.
Other elements of the project are:
• Renovating the west side of the basement to become a document storage area.
• Redoing the ramp in the back of the building that leads to a pair of overhead doors.
• Renovating a mezzanine to create a meeting room and three or four office cubicles.
Other bidders for the project were Doyle Construction, Fort Dodge, $569,920; Sande Construction & Supply Co., Humboldt, $585,398; Kolacia Construction, Fort Dodge, $632,697; Woodruff Construction, Fort Dodge, $623,700; Gehlhausen Construction Inc., Fort Dodge, $669,945.
The Municipal Building at 819 First Ave. S. was built in 1914. It has been renovated in phases in a project that began in 2008. Assistant City Manager Ryan Maehl said the project awarded Monday will probably be the final phase of the renovations.
In other business Monday, the council purchased a new garbage truck from Elliot Equipment, of Grimes, for $405,276.96. It will replace a 2020 model now in use which will be sold.
