Sac County warns of jail scam

Scammers demand money for jail bonds

ODEBOLT — The Sac County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam targeting northern Iowa residents.

According to Chief Deputy Katie Stange, scammers are calling residents and posing as a family member stating that they’ve been arrested, jailed and are in need of bond money. After convincing the victim of the urgency for money, they instruct them to withdraw cash and wait for a courier to arrive at their home to collect the cash bond.

Stange said Sac County residents have been targeted this week. Residents in the areas of County Road M43 and Fox Avenue between Highways 20 and 175 as well as 315th Street between Fox Avenue and Hope Avenue and Hope Avenue from 315th Street to 270th Street are asked to check any cameras they may have at their home or farm for video of vehicles that may have been used in the crime.

The Sac County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents not to send money to strangers and to verify the situation. If a resident receives a call about a family member being arrested, contact the local law enforcement agency directly or the jail where they are supposedly being held to verify details.

Starting at $2.99/week.
