Sheriffs warn of scam
Callers pose as family members
HUMBOLDT — Multiple sheriff’s departments throughout north central Iowa are warning residents of a scam targeting residents, some of which have lost tens of thousands of dollars.
Last week, Sac County Chief Deputy Katie Stange said scammers were calling residents and posting as a family member stating that they’ve been arrested, jailed, and were in need of bond money.
On Tuesday, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department said a resident fell for the same scam and lost several thousand dollars.
“Often the victim is coached by the scammer to lie to the bank about why they want to withdraw large sums of money,” the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post about the ongoing scam. “The scammers do this because they don’t want to draw suspicion of the bank personnel.”
In most instances, a co-conspirator to the scam will come to the victim’s home and retrieve the cash.
“These scammers are relentless predators with no conscience,” said Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger. “As family members gather together for this holiday season, please speak to your elderly and vulnerable family members. Don’t let them be tricked.”
