Title, registrations available in all Iowa counties
Fee increase to be retained by county
Iowa residents can now complete initial vehicle title and registration transactions in any of Iowa’s 99 counties.
Previously, residents were required to file title related transactions in the county in which they reside. However, the Iowa legislature amended Iowa Code which allows initial filing to be done in any Iowa courthouse, effective Jan. 1, 2025.
“It’s going to make conducting titling business more convenient for residents,” said Mindy Jacobs, second deputy Webster County treasurer. “We have residents who work in Webster County, but live in other counties or vice versa and can’t come to their local courthouse over the lunch hours on business days. This will make it more convenient and accessible for residents.”
According to Jacobs, title and registration-related transactions, including regular title and registration, rebuilt, interstate motor carrier title, delinquent dealer title, title and registration for specially constructed vehicle, in-transit title, replacement title, non-transferable registration, dealer titles, title after non-transferable registration, security interest, in-transit plates, junking certificates, and 30 day permits, can now be filed at any Iowa courthouse.
Currently, renewals must be done in the courthouse in which the resident resides.
The fees for many titling and registration transactions will also increase effective Jan. 1. According to Jacobs, these fees will increase between $10-$30 depending on the title. Webster County, or the county performing the transaction, will retain the added fee.
