District mourns loss of FD Middle School administrator
Miller killed Saturday in single-vehicle crash
The Fort Dodge Community School District is reeling from the loss of Middle School Assistant Principal Aaron Miller.
The 35-year-old Fort Dodge man was killed in a single-vehicle car accident early Saturday morning.
Miller was a 2007 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate and current varsity assistant softball coach for the Dodgers. As a Dodger athlete, he was a wrestling state qualifier and part of Fort Dodge’s state qualifying baseball team.
He has coached basketball, baseball, football and softball at Fort Dodge. This was Miller’s first year as an assistant principal after teaching at the Fort Dodge Middle School.
Miller started teaching in the Fort Dodge district in the fall of 2013. This was his 11th year.
The Fort Dodge school district will provide support for students and staff this week as they grieve the passing of Miller.
“We have lots of local support from our health facilities,” said Fort Dodge Superintendent Josh Porter Sunday night. “We will have counseling and administration readily available for students and faculty — it will be all hands on deck.
“Aaron (Miller) would want us to be in school and continue. While it hurts, we’re going to do our best. Our priority will be with our staff and students.”
The Fort Dodge district released the following statement to parents Saturday.
“We understand that this news may be difficult for many of our students and families,” Lydia Schuur, the district’s director of communications and community relations, wrote in a message to parents of district students. “To support our students, school counselors and additional support staff will be available to talk with any student who needs assistance processing their feelings or emotions. If your child would like to meet with a counselor, please encourage them to let their teacher know, or feel free to contact the school directly.
“During times like this, it’s important that we come together as a community to support one another,” she added. “Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there’s anything we can do to support your family.”
According to Webster County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Burns, dispatchers received a crash detection report from an iPhone at 1:09 a.m. Saturday, which led officers to the 2200 mile of 235th Street, a road that runs parallel to U.S. Highway 20 on the southern edge of Fort Dodge.
Webster County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene at 1:17 a.m.
The initial investigation indicated that Miller was traveling east in a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when the vehicle entered the ditch and went airborne after hitting a field drive. This caused the vehicle to roll, eventually coming to rest facing west.
Miller, who was traveling alone, was ejected from the vehicle.
Burns said lifesaving measures were given at the scene, and Miller was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Webster County Sheriff’s deputies, as well as the Otho and Fort Dodge fire departments responded to the scene.
Burns said the crash remains under investigation and the cause is unknown at this time.
