Lehigh fire department aids in water main issue
LEHIGH — The recent polar vortex has caused its fair share of problems around the Webster County area.
Many different solutions have been used by officials to figure them out. However, none may have had as much innovation as the one Lehigh City Maintenance Director Chad Popp produced Monday.
With half of the small town without water for 12 hours due to a main freeze on the side of a bridge, Popp suggested using fire hoses to link up and assist residents.
“I’d never done anything like that,” Fire Chief Aaron Morris said. “We went from hydrant to hydrant with 2 1/2 inches to 1/2-inch hoses and connected female to female on the other end. So far, as of Friday afternoon, Feb. 21, it is doing the job.
“We have guys checking it thoroughly throughout the day and night,” he added. “We all live close by in case of an emergency.”
Morris and the department are also ready if fire would break out locally.
“We have plenty of fire hose for those situations,” he said.
He admitted that the department and town like everyone else in the region will be glad to see the temperatures rise.
“Once the thermometer goes up, the main freeze should resolve soon,” Morris said.
