Schuur will not seek re-election

Decision ends eight years on FD council

Fort Dodge City Councilwoman Lydia Schuur announced Wednesday that she will not seek re-election in November.

Schuur is completing her second, four-year term as an at-large member of the council.

“Serving Fort Dodge has been an incredible honor, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated over the years with so many dedicated people to help shape our city’s future,” she said.

Schuur said she is “sincerely grateful” to the city staff.

“It is because of their commitment, knowledge and dedication to Fort Dodge’s progress that our community continues to grow and thrive,” she added. “They often don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

“I am proud to be from Fort Dodge, and I look forward to our continued progress in the years ahead,” Schuur said. “I will always be a committed advocate for our community, and will always support efforts to move Fort Dodge forward.”

She was elected to the council in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.

During her eight years in office, Schuur was an early leader in the effort to get a Safe Haven Baby Box installed at the city firehouse. The box, built into the wall of the structure, provides an option for a parent to surrender their baby. She also worked to make the construction of a new skate park a priority.

Schuur is the second city government incumbent to announce that they will not seek re-election this year. Mayor Matt Bemrich said he will not seek a fifth term.

City voters will pick a mayor and six of the seven council members in November. Councilwoman Megan Secor is the only member of the council whose seat is not on the ballot this year.

The only declared candidates so far are Councilman Dave Flattery, who is running for mayor, and Tood McCubbin, who is running for the Ward 3 council seat.

Starting at $2.99/week.
