FD City Council to hold property tax hearing

Public hearing set for 5:30 tonight, with council meeting to follow at 6 p.m.

Fort Dodge residents will have a chance to weigh in on the city government’s proposed property tax levy during a public hearing tonight.

The hearing will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

The proposed property tax levy for the fiscal year that begins July 1 is $20.75 per $1,000 of taxable value.

That levy rate is broken down as follows:

• $8.54 for the general fund, which pays for police and fire protection, plus a wide range of other government services.

• $6.54 for employee benefits.

• $4.50 to pay off general obligation bond debt.

• 76 cents for property and liability insurance.

• 33 cents to support Dodger Area Rapid Transit.

• 8 cents to support Webster County Emergency Management.

After the hearing, the property tax levy rate can be reduced, but it cannot be increased.

The proposed levy is down 20 cents from the current rate of $20.95 per $1,000 of taxable value.

The council’s regular business meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

During that meeting, a public hearing will be held on the sports pavilion at Corridor Plaza that the City Council purchased and intends to lease to its original developer, M and M LLC, of Ankeny. That firm would then operate the facility. Its rent payments would be used to pay off the $9.5 million debt the council incurred to buy the building.

The council will receive written and oral comments about the project, but no action will be taken.

In an unrelated matter, the council will consider a 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment effective July 1 for workers represented by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2932.

A 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment will also be considered for non-union and management employees.

Starting at $2.99/week.
