Sports pavilion, contracts on tap for FD council tonight

A bond issue for the sports pavilion at Corridor Plaza, a paving contract and labor agreements with the police officers and firefighters are all on the agenda for the Fort Dodge City Council tonight.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

During that meeting, the council will consider borrowing $9.5 million to pay for buying the sports pavilion nearing completion at Corridor Plaza. The building will then be leased to M & M LLC, of Ankeny, which will operate it. Rent payments from that firm are expected to pay off the $9.5 million debt.

The council will also consider awarding a contract for repaving sections of 16 streets this year. Fort Dodge Asphalt Co. submitted the apparent low bid of about $1.8 million.

Two separate labor agreements are on the agenda. One is with Public Professional and Maintenance Employees Local 2003, which represents police officers. The city has a contract with that union that extends through June 30, 2027. However, there was a wage reopener for the final two years of the pact.

Tonight, the council will consider approving wage increases of 1 percent and 1.5 percent for those final two years.

The proposed contract with International Association of Firefighters Local 622 is for the period from July 1 through June 30, 2028. It includes wage increases ranging from .25 percent to 1.5 percent.

The council will also consider awarding contracts for improvements at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex and at Snell-Crawford Park.

The second reading of a measure to rezone property for a new Kwik Star store at Second Avenue North and 15th Street is also on the agenda.

Starting at $2.99/week.
