Deputy shoots suspect after he threatened officers

Suspect led authorities on multi-community pursuit

DAYTON — A Webster County deputy shot and injured a suspect Monday night following a pursuit from Gowrie into the Dayton area.

According to Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener, Webster County Telecommunications Center received a 911 call at 9:46 p.m reporting a domestic disturbance in Gowrie. The caller stated that a male had been consuming alcohol and was leaving the scene in a GMC Sierra. The caller stated that the man had a firearm inside his vehicle and may harm himself or others.

Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, however, the driver attempted to elude deputies through Dayton and the southern part of Webster County. Hamilton County deputies were able to place stop sticks at the intersection of Taylor Avenue and Iowa Highway 175, puncturing one of the vehicle’s tires. A precision immobilization technique was utilized to eventually disable the vehicle near River Road and Iowa Highway 175, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

When deputies exited their vehicles and ordered the suspect to put his hands up, he reached down to the passenger seat and stated that he was getting a gun, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He then made a shooting motion toward a deputy through the back window of the vehicle.

A Webster County deputy fired one shot through the back passenger window, striking the suspect in the right hand, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies were able to detain the suspect. A pistol was located on the driver side floorboard of the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect was transported by ambulance to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center Emergency Room in Fort Dodge and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to Fleener, the suspect’s name, as well as the name of the deputy, will be released later this week. Per Webster County Sheriff’s Department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave until the Webster County Attorney’s Office has reviewed all evidence and case facts.
