Diekman jailed in shooting case

A Fort Dodge man charged with shooting a sleeping man in the face late last month is now in the Webster County Jail.

Dontay B. Diekman, 41, was arrested in Des Moines on Friday and transported to Fort Dodge Monday. He made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Tuesday morning.

According to court records, he is charged with attempted murder, dominion or control of a firearm by a felon and going armed with intent.

He is accused of shooting a man who was sleeping on the floor of a residence at 1433 Fourth Ave. S. in the early morning hours of March 28. In criminal complaints filed against him, Fort Dodge police detectives wrote that Diekman had been in the residence talking with some other people when he went over to the man sleeping on the floor and fired one round at him. The bullet struck the man’s jaw and exited through his mouth, the detectives wrote. Diekman then left the residence.

Police and paramedics were called to 1433 Fourth Ave. S. at 4:05 a.m. March 28.

The injured man was treated at the scene and transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center. He was later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

On Tuesday, Magistrate Sarah J. Livingston scheduled a preliminary hearing on the charges against Diekman for April 25.

She also issued an order directing Diekman to have no contact with the man he is accused of shooting.

Livingston set bond for Diekman at $140,000 cash only.
