Anyone who has stood on the shore of Badger Lake and watched dragon boats knife through the water at the annual Webster County race now has a chance to find out how to get in on the action.

The Dragon Boat Discovery Night, set for 6 p.m. Thursday at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park north of Fort Dodge, will give people an up-close look at the sport.

“Join us for Dragon Boat Discovery Night and learn all about the fun, excitement and community that dragon boating brings,” said Linda Donner, a leader of the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Association.

She said there is no experience necessary to get into dragon boating.

“Just bring your enthusiasm,” she said.

The event will be held at the Bob Huen Shelter House, near the park’s main parking area.

At the event, people will meet current members of dragon boat teams. They will also learn some basic paddling techniques. The strategies needed to get paddlers to work as a team to propel the long boats through the water will also be discussed.

“Whether you’re a beginner, fitness enthusiast, cancer survivor or just looking to try something new, there’s a seat for you,” Donner said.

This year’s Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash will be held June 20-21. There will be a concert by Renegade Soul on June 20.

This summer’s event will be the 27th year for the Dragon Boat Bash.
