GOWRIE — Central Plains Gowrie FFA members braved the cold and wet weather Friday to grill up pork burgers and package homemade meals to feed area farmers.
The Southeast Valley High School and Middle School students packaged 88 meals to feed farmers in Gowrie, Farnhamville, Callender, Moorland, Harcourt, and Dayton.
“It’s great to get our kids out and meeting the ag community,” said Johanna Kunert, FFA adviser and Southeast Valley ag teacher. “It really brings the students and the community together and teaches the students along the way.”
The Webster County Pork Producers donated all of the pork burgers for the event with Pork Producer President Gregg Hora manning the grill. Iowa Corn donated $500 through a grant for the event’s grocery needs, and Iowa State University Extension provided swag for the lunch bags.
“I think it’s important for FFA members to meet with area farmers because they are the ones who have supported us,” said Central Plains Gowrie FFA President Hanna Hicks. “It is also fun to hear about their past FFA experiences and how their farms have evolved.”
