Feenstra supports House budget plan
Democrats: Medicaid is in danger
U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra said he voted for a federal budget resolution Thursday as a way to keep current tax rates in place.
“At the end of this year, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act expires, which would result in a massive tax hike on Americans,” the Republican from Hull said in a written statement. “That’s why I voted for a budget resolution to unlock the process of extending these tax cuts and delivering tax relief for our families, farmers, workers and small businesses.”
“This resolution will also allow us to enact President Trump’s entire agenda of border security, energy independence, and fiscal responsibility,” he added.
The Iowa Democratic Party has a completely different take on the budget resolution, asserting in a statement released Thursday afternoon that it will destroy Medicaid. Medicaid is the health insurance program for poor and disabled people that is funded jointly by the federal and state governments.
According to the Democratic Party, the resolution directs the House Energy and Commerce Committee to cut $880 billion from the programs under its jurisdiction. The only way that can be done, according to the Democratic Party, is to take most of that money from Medicaid.
“It’s clear they are more focused on giving billionaires and special interests giant tax breaks than they are about supporting regular Iowans,” Rita Hart, the chairwoman of the Iowa Democratic Party, said in a written statement.
