Feenstra supports tariffs

Congressman predicts better trade deals are coming

U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra is convinced that good things will come from the tariffs levied by President Donald Trump.

“I’m just trying to push the Trump agenda,” the Republican from Hull said Thursday morning in Fort Dodge.”It’s the art of the deal.”

He said he believes some trade agreements favorable to the United States will emerge in the next two to three weeks as a result of the tariffs.

Feenstra offered his assessment of the tariff situation following a tour of Silgan Containers in Fort Dodge.

He also said that currently Congress is spending most of its time on a budget reconciliation bill that would enable the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 to be extended. The tax cuts in that law will expire at the end of this year. Feenstra and other Republicans have said that if the tax cuts expire, Americans will face the largest tax increase in the nation’s history.

Major spending cuts are being contemplated to make it possible to extend the tax cuts. Feenstra said $238 billion will have to be cut from programs under the jurisdiction of the House Agriculture Committee, of which he is a member. He referred to these cuts as “pay-fors.”

Once that budget reconciliation bill is done, Congress will start working on the budget for fiscal year 2026, which begins on Oct. 1, he said.

After the House Agriculture Committee finishes its work on the budget reconciliation bill, it will turn its attention to the Farm Bill. Feenstra said a Farm Bill could potentially be done by July.
