GOWRIE — The Gowrie Sale Barn was filled with the sounds of livestock and bidding farmers last Friday as auctions at the historic sale barn began once again.

Jeremiah Hall with 5H Auctions in Iowa Falls purchased Gowrie Livestock Auction from the Vonnahme family, with his first day of ownership and first Gowrie auction all happening on the same day.

“That first sale went really well,” said Hall. “There were several buyers in the crowd and there were several head of sheep, goats, and cattle. We did really well for the first sale.”

The Vonnahme family shuttered the Barn on Dec. 20, 2024, after 25 years of ownership following the passing of Dan Vonnahme months earlier. Prior to the Vonnahme ownership, the Barn was owned by the Lizer family and has been a staple of the farming community for generations.

According to Hall, the Vonnahme family are helping with the transition of the auction business and will continue to have Algona Livestock be a drop-off point for sheep, goats and hogs the day prior to a Gowrie livestock sale.

“We are optimistic that Jeremiah and 5H Auctions will be an asset to the livestock community that Dan (Vonnahme) cherished every day,” said the Vonnahme family in a statement.

Hall is an experienced auctioneer with deep roots in agriculture. He and his wife, Amanda, along with children Sydney, Dylan, and Caden, also run the Boone Hay Sale and are looking forward to working with Gowrie area farmers.

“When I heard that Gowrie Livestock was for sale, it felt like the right opportunity for me,” said Hall. “I’ve always loved the auction business, and I’m eager to bring my experience to this community.”

Hall noted that he is aware of the long and esteemed history of the Sale Barn in Gowrie and looks forward to continuing its legacy.

“It’s exciting and scary all at the same time,” said Hall. “I’m excited for the opportunity to get to work with new people in the community and to be part of those deep roots and rich heritage. I’ve heard so many stories over the last few months that we’ve been working on this. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to keep it going.”

A trailer of sheep were unloaded at the Gowrie Livestock Auction last Friday. Jeremiah Hall of 5H Auctions is now the owner of the Sale Barn and plans to continue hosting sales every other Friday of the month.

Hall plans to keep the first and third Friday schedule for auctions, although he and his wife also work full-time for Iowa Select Farms, so dates may change in the future.

For more information or to participate in an auction at the Gowrie Livestock Auction, Hall can be contacted by email at 5HAuctionsLLC@Gmail.com or at 515-689-9371.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” added Hall. “We work with people and we’re honest. We run our business with integrity and we’ll continue to do so with the Gowrie Sale Barn.”
