Dan Cassady has been named conductor of the Karl L. King Municipal Band for the 2025 season. Cassady joined the King Band in 1977 and has also served as assistant conductor.

Dan Cassady has been named the newest conductor of the Karl L. King Municipal Band. Cassady assumes the baton from Jerrold Jimmerson, who retired last season after 21 years at the podium.

“It’s quite an honor to be part of the history and heritage of the King Band,” said Cassady.

Cassady is only the sixth conductor in the band’s 105-year history. He joined the band in 1977 and most recently served as assistant conductor.

“I learned a lot from Jerry,” said Cassady. “Reggie Schive was also a conductor and was a huge influence on me, both as a player and in my teaching career. I have had amazing mentors.”

Cassady is not only a long-time member of the Karl L. King Municipal Band, but he also taught at Fort Dodge Senior High School for 19 years, Iowa Central Community College for 11 years and at St. Edmond Catholic School for 5 1/2 years. He is also a member of many musical groups throughout the state including 515 Big Band, Jive For Five, The Dick Bauman Big Band, Jazzed Up Big Band, Lone Tree Revival, and many ballroom dance bands.

“We have the best municipal band,” said Cassady. “We have a good collection of players and are continuing on the legacy of the music while adding in contemporary pieces. It’s a challenge.”

While Cassady is honored to step into the role of conductor, he was also quick to credit the many band members who keep the historical band moving forward.

“It takes a village,” said Cassady. “We have the board members and members who work in a variety of capacities. It’s a huge deal. This is not about one person, and that’s why it’s so successful.”

Cassady led the band in its first concert of the season on March 23 for the annual Irish concert. The next Karl L. King Band concert will be held April 27 at the Fort Dodge Middle School Auditorium.

Starting at $2.99/week.
