Taking center stage with Briley Singer

Building for the future; Singer packs schedule to find lifetime skills

For Briley Singer, being involved in activities is much more than just being busy.

The Fort Dodge Senior High School senior has packed her schedule full of extracurriculars and that allows her to find new skills that will last a lifetime.

“Being involved in many activities has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and develop skills that will benefit me greatly in the future,” Singer said. “Being a part of a grand scheme of extracurriculars has also allowed me to learn how to collaborate with a wide variety of people.

“My activities also are an outlet for me, as they allow me to focus my energy and passion towards a cause that is non-academic, but is equally rewarding.”

Singer is involved in A Capella Choir, musicals, fall play, Performer’s Club, dance, cheer, National Honor Society, speech, Diversity Action Troupe and Dodger Senate.

On stage, Singer has been able to grow.

“Over the years, I have been in a total of 19 shows,” Singer said. “Some of my favorites have been “Freaky Friday,” “Elf the Musical,” and “Frozen Jr.” I love being involved with musicals because it is such a unique experience, and it benefits me greatly.

“With every show I’ve been in comes great opportunities for growth outside and inside. Outside, because I am able to meet and collaborate with people who I wouldn’t have otherwise, and inside, because since being involved with theater, I have felt my confidence skyrocket. I feel as though if you can go in front of a crowd and perform like no one is watching, you can do anything.”

Singer has a special memory from every time she has stepped on stage.

“When discussing specific musicals, each of them holds a special place in my heart as they all have offered me different experiences and castmates,” Singer said. “My personal favorite roles I’ve had have been Fiona in “Shrek the Musical Jr.” and Mother Goose in “Mother Goose’s Golden Christmas.”

“Currently I am in “Anastasia” at Fort Dodge Senior High as Maria Romanov and a dance captain. This has been one of my dream shows, so I am looking forward to performing this as my senior year show.”

Being a part of a group or club has helped develop friendships for Singer.

“What I love about choir is that it has given me a community. Each choir I have been a part of always felt like a big family,” Singer said. “Choir has been something that has really gotten me through my high school years, and it is a place where most of my most valued friendships lie.

“While being in high school my all-time favorite choir memory was being a part of the 2023 Iowa All-State Show Choir. Being a part of choir has been so much more than just reading notes on sheet music; but it is a place where community and a shared love for the art is created.”

As a Dodger freshman, she joined speech, and it was a decision she has enjoyed for the past four years.

“Speech is time-consuming, but I wouldn’t take back a single minute I spent on it. When I was a freshman, my speech coach, Jenna Hendrix, approached me in the hallway at school and told me I should join — as any impressionable freshman would, I did,” Singer said “Little did I know that I would fall absolutely in love with the program, and it would eventually become my most valued extracurricular, even rewarding me with All-State honors in the category group mime.

“I will not severely grieve many programs post-graduation, but I know for a fact that speech will be an exception.”

As time winds down on her senior year, there are plenty of memories that Singer will take with her.

“Senior year is such a bittersweet experience as it is the gateway to the next chapter of life, which also means it’s the conclusion of another,” Singer said. “I feel as though the thing I will miss most is seeing my friends everyday, as we all are going our separate ways.

“I also will miss the performing arts program, as theatre has been my home for years, but people are not meant to spend their entire life living in one small municipality, but to go experience new surroundings.”

With every memory, there are also new ones to make.

“What I’m truly looking forward to is a fresh start and living in another community,” Singer said. “I am thrilled to meet new people and experience a different place of living, as I will be moving to Cedar Falls in the fall.

“Another aspect that excites me is new opportunities, especially for travel, as I hope to find myself exploring new cities, states, and countries in the near future.”

Singer has leaned on her family for support and guidance as she has grown.

“Throughout my four years in high school, there have been countless positive influences in my life. The most important thing to me has to be my family,” Singer said. “Through the constant change and highs and lows, they have been the stability I’ve needed.

“They have always been there to support me, whether something as small as getting a good grade on a test to performing at a football game; they are present, loud, and proud.”

After high school, Singer will be attending the University of Northern Iowa, where she will major in communications.
