Teen suspects lead officers on pursuit

Speeds reached 100 mph

Two teenage suspects in a reportedly stolen vehicle led police on a pursuit that started in Fort Dodge and ended on U.S. Highway 20 about four miles east of the city early Monday afternoon.

The pursuit began when Fort Dodge police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle, according to Lt. Aaron Smidt, of the Iowa State Patrol. The driver refused to stop and fled out of the city to U.S. Highway 20.

The vehicle, a Toyota Camry, went eastbound on U.S. Highway 20, with speeds reaching 100 mph. Smidt said the vehicle then crossed the highway median and began going east in the westbound lanes, creating what Smidt called an “extremely dangerous” situation.

He said the vehicle was traveling close to the edge of the highway median and hit a small embankment, damaging it. He said the driver then tried to pull out into the westbound lanes, but two troopers closed in and used their vehicles to block him from doing so.

The pursuit ended near the highway’s intersection with Taylor Avenue. The driver, a 15-year-old boy, and the passenger, a 13-year-old girl, were arrested.

Both State Patrol vehicles were damaged, as was the stolen vehicle. The Duncombe Fire Department and an ambulance from the Fort Dodge Fire Department were dispatched to the Taylor Avenue location, but no serious injuries were reported.

Webster County sheriff’s deputies and Iowa Department of Natural Resources officers were also involved in the pursuit.

The situation remains under investigation by Fort Dodge police and the State Patrol.
