HARCOURT — U.S. Highway 169 near Palm Grove will soon be bustling with additional traffic as semis delivering wind turbine blades, job trailers, and various components are anticipated as construction of 107 wind turbines begins.

The project, which is part of the Lundgren Wind Farm, has started at the intersection of 320th Street and Lainson Avenue/U.S. Highway 169, with dirt being moved for the incoming trailers and job equipment.

Travis Daniels, project manager for MidAmerican Energy, and Mitch Steffas, construction manager for the project, spoke to the Webster County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning.

“We started last week on the laydown park,” said Daniels. “At 320th Street and Highway 169, we have a 10-acre piece of land, the northeast corner, that will be used for job trailers, storage, and construction equipment.”

Daniels said that he anticipates the trailers to be delivered on May 2.

“Activity will begin picking up,” said Daniels. “Our first deliveries should begin the Friday before Memorial Day. We’ll stage on a local access road to the wind turbine so that the first Tuesday after Memorial Day we can hit the ground running.”

Daniels said that after Memorial Day, regular deliveries to the laydown park are anticipated to continue.

Daniels told the supervisors that the project plan anticipates deliveries and additional traffic will slow the week of Aug. 11 with land reclamation and restoration to follow. The project is anticipated to be completed by Oct. 4.

“We have had meetings with Webster County Engineer Jamie Johll,” said Daniels. “We’ve talked about permitting, road use, haul roads, dust suppression, and more. We’ve also met with Webster County Emergency Manager Dylan Hagen and held a safety meeting with different emergency departments. We discussed the construction safety plan as well as tower rescue simulations.”

Daniels said the MidAmerican project team has also met with local contractors and landowners to discuss the project plans and to answer technical questions.

The Lundgren Wind Farm project was developed by EDF Renewables and purchased by MidAmerican Energy. The wind farm project supplies enough clean energy to power 75,000 households.

Starting at $2.99/week.
