Warrant issued for Fort Dodge arson suspect

Freeman failed to show up for hearing

A nationwide arrest warrant was issued for a Fort Dodge woman accused of setting an apartment on fire in January after she failed to show up at a plea hearing Monday.

The plea agreement that was to be the focus of Monday’s hearing would have enabled Megan S. Freeman, 34, to avoid prison.

Freeman is charged with setting a fire in a second story apartment at 211 N. 12th St. on the afternoon of Jan. 26. That apartment sustained serious fire damage while the rest of the second floor sustained heat and smoke damage. No one was injured.

Freeman was arrested by Fort Dodge police on Jan. 27 and charged with first-degree arson, third-degree arson and first-degree harassment.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys eventually reached an agreement in which Freeman would plead guilty to second-degree arson and all other charges would be dropped. She would have received a 10-year suspended prison sentence, a $1,025 fine and five years of probation. She would also have to stay in a residential treatment program at the YWCA.

Freeman was released from the Webster County Jail earlier this month when a vacancy in the YWCA program opened up, according to court records.

However, she did not show up for the plea hearing Monday.

District Court Judge Christopher Polking issued a nationwide arrest warrant for Freeman.

Starting at $2.99/week.
