CHARLIE HANCOCK

Charles L. “Charlie” Hancock, 80 years-old, passed away peacefully on April 10th, 2016 surrounded by family in his home at Via Christe Assisted Living, in Omaha, NE.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held for his family in Omaha with the burial at St. John’s Cemetery in Emmetsburg, IA, at a later date.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janese, also of Via Christe, Omaha, NE; sons Tim (Diane) Hancock, Joe (Kristen) Hancock, and Patrick Hancock, all of Omaha, NE; grandsons Tim (Molly) Hancock Jr., Stillwater, MN, Michael and Patrick of Omaha, NE; granddaughters Katey Hancock, Omaha, NE and Lucy Hancock of Chicago, IL; and great-grandsons Robbie and Jimmy Hancock, Stillwater, MN. Preceded in death by his infant son; parents, Garland and Marie (Johnson) Hancock; and sister Helen (Mrs. Blaine) Anderson.

Charlie was born on September 11, 1935, in Boone, IA. He graduated from Boone High School in 1953 and held the men’s 800-meter-run state track title for over 50 years. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict. On May 31, 1958, he was united in marriage to Janese Carney in Boone, IA. They moved to Chicago, where he was employed by the Seed Bureau Corporation.

In 1963 they settled in Fort Dodge, IA, where he was co-owner and operator of Carney & Hancock Railroad Salvage. Then in 1981, he became owner and operator of Charles A. Brown Men’s Clothing stores in Fort Dodge and Spencer, IA.

Charlie took great pride and solace in his faith, converting to Catholicism in 1972 under the instruction of Father Richard Kielbasa. In 1968, Charlie and Janese purchased a summer home in Lake Okoboji, IA, where he spent his time boating, fishing and frequenting Oh Shuck’s Bait and Tackle for a cup of coffee with friends. Their family enjoyed decades of summer fun at the lake house and they retired there in 2001. Charlie was known for his steadfast love and loyalty, to his family, friends, dogs and favorite athletic team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

In the spring of 2015, they moved to Via Christe Assisted Living of Omaha, NE, to be near their sons and family. Memorials to Charlie may be left to Via Christe Assisted Living for the “Chapel Fund” or to the Nebraska Humane Society.
