Roland McKay, 82, of Fort Dodge, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.
A service honoring Roland’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 8, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. Interment will follow in St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors presented by American Legion Post #119 and V.F.W. Post #5240. Visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Roland is survived by his wife Rochelle; his son Roland ‘JR’ McKay Jr.; three granddaughters, Courtney, Bailey and Brittney; step granddaughter Alyssa McCoy; brother Doras McKay; sister Leona Collins; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Roxann, and his sisters, Rosalie and Shirley.
Roland E. McKay, the son of W. Lester and Netha (Akers) McKay, was born November 16, 1939, at Sharpsburg, Iowa. He graduated from Sharpsburg High School in 1958. Roland served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963, serving on the aircraft carriers Rochester and Ranger. Following his discharge, Roland worked at Wright Tree Service from 1964 to 1968. On September 27, 1964, Roland was united in marriage to Rochelle Tofteberg in Bode. In 1968, Roland went to work for the city of Fort Dodge, and 33 years later retired as City Forester.
Roland was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and served as president of the local FOE and as a 30-year secretary. He was the current state auditor for the FOE and was appointed State and National Father in the same year. During the current year he was selected as Father of the Year for the state auxiliary. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Fort Dodge and a participant on the Honor Flight.
