DORIS WOODS
Doris Elaine Woods (Dorie) passed away on March 8, 2023 at age 101. She was born in Fort Dodge in 1921 to Albert and Lenora Lohr.
When Dorie was 14, her father accepted a position with a textile company in Trion, Georgia. In 1936 she moved to this small cotton mill town with her parents and her older sister Veva. It was there that she met and dated her future husband Cal, and they both graduated from high school in 1939. Her family then moved back to Iowa, to Des Moines, where Dorie attended college at Drake University and pledged Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
Cal was attending pharmacy school in Atlanta but visited Dorie in Iowa each summer. Dorie graduated with a BA degree from Drake in 1943 and began teaching high school English in Menlo, Iowa. Cal finished his pharmacy education that December, and they were married in Des Moines on February 12, 1944. Cal was drafted into the Army shortly thereafter.
Following military service, Cal and Dorie lived in Des Moines for five years before moving to Fort Dodge in 1952, where he opened a pharmacy in the Kersten Clinic. In 1960 they built a drugstore in north Fort Dodge, Cal Woods Pharmacy. He and Dorie operated that store until they retired in 1986. They then moved to Florida for 15 years prior to moving back to Fort Dodge in 2006.
Cal and Dorie were active members of the First United Methodist Church, where Dorie was a member of UMW. She was also a member of Tri-T (TTT) and PEO.
In her leisure time, Dorie enjoyed reading, playing bridge and other games, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, doing crossword puzzles, and baking fabulous pies. She and Cal enjoyed many wonderful trips with their Airstream trailer. They also hosted three foreign exchange students.
In 2013 Dorie began writing interesting and fun stories about her childhood, school experiences, marriage during the war, raising a family, and their later years. These were all bound into booklet form for everyone in the family and will be treasured forever as a wonderful way to remember Dorie and Cal.
Dorie is survived by daughter Susan Woods of Portland, Oregon; son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Judy Woods of South Lyon, Michigan; and daughter and son-in-law Marianne and Randy Kiliper of Ames. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Scott, Kristin, Lindsay, Tom, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband Calvin Woods, her parents, her sister Veva Jones, and great-grandson Caleb.
A service will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be made to Friendship Haven, the First United Methodist Church, or Unity Point Hospice.
