Joan Horn
Joan (McMahon) Horn of Fort Dodge, was called to her eternal home on November 8, 2024. After a life dedicated to faith and family, of caring and giving to others, her big heart finally gave out after 92 memorable years.
Born July 12, 1932, in Hartland, MN, Joan was educated in a one-room country school in Elkhorn Township before graduating from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1950. The hip teenage hangout was the Laramar Ballroom where she met Harold Horn, the love of her life. Harold and Joan were married in 1952 and remained happily wed until Harold passed away one week following their 50th wedding anniversary.
Joan was a full partner in the farming operation, raising chickens, walking beans and hauling grain. And then there was the food. With a husband who loved to eat, six hungry kids and the inevitable guests and farm help, Joan cooked, and cooked and cooked. Her meatloaf and chocolate chip cookies were legendary.
Besides cooking, Joan enjoyed wintering near relatives in Arizona, playing cards, doing crosswords and other games and helping others. She was a caregiver for several elderly friends and relatives, always there to provide for both their physical and emotional needs. And if you knew Joan in any way, she almost certainly said a rosary or ten for you.
Joan is survived by her children Gary (Celine) Horn of New Brighton, MN, Greg (Connie) Horn of Fort Dodge, Maureen McCubbin of Liberty, MO, Mary (Brian) Herrmann of Eagle Grove, Mark (Robin) Horn of Gilbert, AZ and Carolyn Nelson (Chad Street), West Des Moines, as well as 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, son-in-law Wally McCubbin, brothers Joe, Dan and Wayne McMahon and parents Joe and Inga McMahon.
Visitation will be at Laufersweiler Funeral Home in Fort Dodge on Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Holy Trinity Parish. Burial will follow at North Lawn Cemetery.
