Lyle Day

Lyle Edward Day, 89, died Monday, December 2, 2024 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Lyles wish was to be cremated with no services held at this time. Arrangements have been entrusted with Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Lyle was born on October 2, 1935 in Humboldt, IA. He grew up as the middle child of seven, all working on their 80 acre post-depression family farm. At 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, signal corps and was stationed in Germany. In 1956 Lyle reluctantly attended a GI dance with any Army buddy while on leave in England where he met the one and only love of his life and wife to be, Valerie Ann Martin. He returned to the States after his enlistment and saved enough money to bring Valerie from London to Humboldt, IA where they were united in marriage on June 2, 1957. They have spent every single day together since. Lyle worked several jobs in his early years including a gandy-dancer for the railroad and store manager for Kresge’s Department Store. The majority of his career was spent at Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric working his way up from a groundsman to the electrical distribution supervisor. He volunteered for years at Operation Christmas and became a member of the Webster County Sheriff’s Reserve. Lyle had many hobbies and interests all of an outdoors nature. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He won 100’s of trophies and awards while competing on retriever trials and more awards for his proficiency with racing homer pigeons. When age prevented his hunting, he spent his weekends rooting on the Hawkeyes on Saturday and the Raiders and Packers on Sunday.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents George and Johanna; his siblings Beverly, Gordon, Shelda, Chuck, Sharon and Norman. Lyle is survived by his wife Valerie; sons Mark (Nicole) Day and David (Pat) Day; 9 grandchildren Nicholas, Sarah, Andrew, Marshall, Kenneth, Keira, Ken, Christopher and Kelly; and 14 great-grandchildren

Lyle was fiercely independent, and a rare man in whom you could always believe what he said, expect what he promised and be satisfied in what he delivered.
