Larry D. Lee, 87, of Fort Dodge, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at Journeys of Friendship Haven.
A service honoring Larry’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 6, at First Presbyterian Church. Family interment services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church.
Larry is survived by his children, Laura Cochlin of Albert Lea, MN, Joel Lee (wife Liz) of Iowa City, Janelle Swanson of Fort Dodge, Linnea Vargas of Hutto, Texas; nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his parents, Lytle and Gertrude, and his brother Herb.
Larry D. Lee, the son of Lytle and Gertrude (Messerly) Lee, was born February 21, 1937, in Fort Dodge. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1955, received his bachelor’s from Macalester College in 1959, and in 1971 his master’s from Boston College. On August 17, 1958, Larry was united in marriage to Joanne Arnold in Fort Dodge. Larry taught school in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, before returning to Fort Dodge in 1964, where he taught math in the Fort Dodge Community School District, retiring in 1996.
Larry was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, on the Long-Range Planning committee, sang in the church choir and was a long time member of the Tuesday morning breakfast Bible study. He was a past member of Golden K Kiwanis; Fort Dodge Symphony Board; a volunteer for Pride in Community Appearance (PICA); a member of Retired Webster County Teachers; former member of the Iowa State Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Iowa Counsel of Teachers of Mathematics.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his family, going to church and playing hymns on the piano . He was an avid reader, participated in bridge clubs, was a good cook and baker, enjoyed spending time and making connections with others and was proud to have been a teacher at Fort Dodge High School. He will be remembered as a kind man and a favorite teacher to many.
